By Auma Jesca Draparaku
Like Jesus who abandoned all the glories of heaven
To become man so that we may be saved
You abandoned all the
Luxuries and the comfort of Europe
To come and dwell among a people you don’t know
A people you have nothing in common with
Took trouble to learn their mother tongue that
you may communicate with them
The mansions of Italy you left for the grass thatched huts of Africa
The smooth tarmacked roads of Europe for the muddy and dusty paths of Awac
The confortable lavatories of Milan
For the disgusting and embarrassing bushes of Awac.
Clean tap waters of Europe for Awac
Where it was a hassle to get even the dirty water
For washing your clothes
Leave alone just for quenching your thirst.
Spaghetti and Italian pizza the food of your childhood
For boo, malakwang and kwon kal
Moreover with the odi and kal crudely ground on the stone.
You humbled yourself to eating ngwen and nsenene
Like the Ugandans do.
The Italian Acholi man, the white Ugandan you became
You identified with us the people of the ‘DARK’ continent
No wonder you acquired African immunity
Demanded for even your soul to rest at Bbiina
Oh Fr. John, what a painful sacrifice you made for the people of Africa, the people of Uganda.
How can we repay you?
You healed the sick
The sick who had lost hope of living recovered
You restored their hope
For surgery abroad you sponsored
Drugs from Europe you bought
Expatriates from Italy you brought
To screen the women of cervical cancer, breast cancer
You built Hospitals
Benedict medical center, cancer ward and laboratories at Nsambya
Your name indelibly engraved
Oh Fr. John the undisputable ambassador of Christ today.
How can we repay you?
Like Christ you calmed the storms of our lives
Gave hope to the hopeless
The naked you warmly covered
The hungry you fed
The homeless you sheltered
Provided jobs to the unemployed
Jobs with good working conditions
Like our heavenly father
You became a father to the fatherless
The husband to the widows
