THE Supreme Court, in a 64-
page judgment has confirmed that
court retains the discretion to sentence
to death, a convict of a capital offence.
The highest justices in the country,
in the same vein agreed with their
counterparts of the Constitutional
Court, which annulled the mandatory
death sentence. The landmark
judgment was delivered on January

VATICAN: According to the
Vatican Information Service (VIS) in
the afternoon of January 20, 2009,
the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI
sent a telegram to Barack Obama,
congratulating him on his inauguration
as forty-fourth president of the United
States of America. In the English
message, the pontiff offered his “cordial good wishes, together with
the assurance of my prayers that the
Almighty God will grant you unfailing
wisdom and strength in the exercise
