Essays For Cash

In a bid to support the inculcation of leadership values among the young generation, starting this month, the Leadership Magazine will offer cash prizes to readers who will submit winning essays of topical interest on any theme, including those that may have been covered in the Magazine:

- Participation is open to only students, enrolled in one of the secondary schools in Uganda, with proper identification of such school.

- Essays must be intelligible, with a consistent flow of issues, excluding fiction, although hypothetical examples can be used to illustrate facts.

- They must be between 900 and 1,500 words and may include relevant pictures (among them, a mug-shot of the author), for emphasis.

- A panel of experienced judges, including carefully selected staff of leadership, shall select the winning entries based on the topic, facts (supported by authorities), grammar and style, among others. Pictures shall not be considered.

- A student may make as many entries as she or he can, a month, provided she or he submits each of the entries accompanied by an original ‘cut-out’ piece from this corner, before the twentieth (20th) day of the month following the Leadership issue, from which the student made the ‘cut-out’.

- Students are encouraged to use courier, for the delivery of their entries. But, all are welcome to bring them personally to the Leadership offices.

- Students may also work and submit an essay as a team, provided they are able to state the number of contributors and attach a list of their names, to the original ‘cut-off’ piece. Each member of the group shall have proper identification as a student.

- Entries shall become the property of Leadership, and may be published, with the sole discretion of the Editor, including that of changing the substance. But, credit shall be given to the author(s).
- Plagiarism will lead to automatic disqualification, but, it is also a civil wrong that can lead to a court case.

- Students are encouraged to consult with teachers.

Prizes shall include sh100,000; sh80,000 and sh50,000 for the first, second and third winning entries in that order. Claims can be made on any workday, after publication of the winners.
At the end of the year, a school with the highest number of winners, will be given a ‘huge’ reward, by the Superior of the Comboni Missionaries in Uganda, who are the sole sponsors of the Leadership Magazine.
