At a General Meeting on March 23rd, 1950, the UN decided that this date should be given to the Day of Meteorology. The day commemorates the creation of the World Meteorological Organization as a specialized agency of the United Nations system in 1951, and highlights the importance of meteorology. Each year the World Meteorological Day has a different theme ‘Climate for You’. This United Nations’ (UN) annual event features many activities and events such as conferences, symposia and exhibitions for meteorological professionals, community leaders and the general public. Many prizes for meteorological research are presented or announced on or close to World Meteorological Day.
