Africa ‘Loses Out On Mining Cash’
Mineral -rich African states have been deprived of
huge sums
of royalties and taxes by mining firms, a report says.
The report, by prominent development charities, blames
a lack of legislative oversight and excessively generous
tax concessions agreed with the firms. It says some
mining companies have also avoided paying tax through
secret
contracts with African governments.

Pope Grants Plenary Indulgence For Year Of Priests
VATICAN: Pope Benedict XVI will grant priests and lay
faithful ‘Plenary Indulgence’ during the
Year for Priests, which is expected to run from June
19, 2009 to June 19, 2010, in honour of St Jean- Marie
Vianney of Ars. The Holy See made the announcement,
early May, in a decree signed by James Cardinal Francis
Stafford and Bishop Gianfranco Girotti, OFM, respectively
penitentiary major and regent of the Apostolic Penitentiary.
