LAST month the Uganda National Farmers Federation organised the sixteenth annual Agricultural
Trade Exhibition in Jinja town. Under the theme, ‘Targeting Increasing Agricultural Production as the Engine of Economic Growth,’ the fair had show manager Jimmy Kitaka assert that the federation will this year focus on the production sector to augment production techniques, quality and quantity.
He added that the importance of the theme was that the country would take as priority, market for the products, in view of increasing the farmers’ incomes. In his budget speech early this year, Finance Minister Dr EzraSuruma told Parliament that Uganda needed to encourage production and processing of agricultural products in order to attract investors.
“Uganda is an agricultural country and we need to encourage production and processing of our
agricultural products in order to attract investments in this sector, especially in rural areas,”
Suruma was quoted saying. He additionally stated that the government would create incentives for persons engaged in agro-processing in a bid to add value to agricultural produce.
