INTERNAL squabbles of parties have greeted the offer of the donor community to fund
opposition political groups in Uganda. From the old Democratic Party (DP) to the Forum for
Democratic Change (FDC) virtually every one of the parties is having in-fights, either for
power or some influence related. A few, including the two times government holder Uganda
People’s Congress (UPC), JEEMA and Conservative Party (CP) have formed a coalition
with FDC to unseat the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) – organization, a gesture
that analysts have looked at with much reservation.
But, while the move was being digested in the political realm, Beti Olive Kamya an envoy in the office of the FDC president Kizza Besigye tendered her resignation, stirring up the party and threatening the coalition. Sources say she was scheming the position of the party chairperson that fell vacant with the recent death of Dr Suleiman Kigundu. She contends, however that the party is bent on marginalizing the Baganda peoples, among whom she hails.
FDC publicist Wafula Ogutu denies allegations of sectarianism in the party. He says, Kamya, who is also Lubaga North parliamentary representative is advancing a personal grudge that does not reflect a concern of the Baganda. He has advised the MP to seek legal redress in the courts of law, since FDC is a party, if she fails to address the matter within the relevant internal organs. Kamya, who has made clear her stance of remaining an FDC member, blames Besigye for the squabbles in her party.
