The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page, is an inspirational quote by St. Augustine of Hippo referring to a narrow view a person develops about the World due to inability to travel enough or at all. The African idiom ‘The person who has not traveled widely thinks their mother is the best or the only good cook’ is another eye-opener. As a young person, the best gift to give yourself in 2020 is reading at least more pages of the world beyond your area of residence, workplace, university, parish, school, town, etc. We need to twinkle our energy into thinking of travelling too, not just for the sake but widening the mind to the global aspect.
This calls us to seize every chance there is to traverse the world. For how far you get exposed this year is how wide your perception will get about the World. Without exposure and interaction with other people, it is easy to be judgmental and negative. But with exposure, you will realise how many good people are out there beyond the bad dominating where you are, in turn, building your inner will: zeal to fight for good.
Travelling gets our eyes off our challenges to instead focus on finding solutions when we see how others have solved even bigger problems. Mark Twain an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer is quoted saying: “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime”.
The cause of racism and tribalism is lack of exposure. Stereotypes about people or tribes exist due to less or lack of exposure. You can tell how widely exposed a person is by the judgements they make. High level of exposure: deep levels of analysis. With exposure, one will realise every human being is born unique across the globe all with varying intelligence expressed differently. Exposure is almost everything because it informs attitude. Attitude is the 100% score magic word for success. Attitude is everything. As your attitude is, so you are. Intentionally travel to improve your attitude. Travel instills the spirit of co-existence.
Don’t worry we are together in this, I have not been there too but… God willing will. Prejudice is killed by appreciating beauty, nature and culture. I am yet to find a perfect place and culture in the World but, have found beautiful uniqueness in all of them; each presenting something positive to society. Therefore, every region, people and challenges of those people are a great opportunity to appreciate life.
Missionaries and social workers are said to live contentedly because of learning quickly to appreciate what life offers-both good and challenges as opposed to rustling with it. In interacting with people, they realise before long how everyone in life has a piece of a life cake called challenges. This does not denote settling for less or leading a mediocre life, rather, learning the art of selecting the most important problems worth giving attention, according time and concentration. Before travelling, you might presume all life’s problems were poured to your family only to discover you have not even a tea spoonful.
Whether you are a youth, parent, or leader, work without play makes Jack a dull boy. Start the decade with a fresh mind. Travel opportunities are enormous; though, do not model upon commercialisation of travel by schools as ventures of passing time rather than learning. If the World is a global village, as it’s always sang, then staying at your village, is not preparing oneself for out-of-the-world-competition game in tweni tweni. The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page. Uganda Zaabu.
