The Covid-19 pandemic was a blessing in disguise. This is because after the pandemic, things did not remain the same. Although lives and jobs were lost, ideas on looking at the world in a different perspective were born. Amidst the challenges that the population was faced with, a reflection on what, why, how, where and when questions, gave birth to problem solving techniques. Kinawataka Christian Youth Missionary Group is such that took the opportune moment of being together to make the best out of it.
How it all started
Kinawataka is highly populated, with many idle youths. Moreover, the community was faced with an unusually scientific life which, they embraced painfully. Besides, the community is faced with poor disposal of wastes and is choking with plastics and polythenes among other things that block the drainage system. In such circumstances, the youth came up with measures to avert the situation, to keep themselves out of boredom and most especially, the troubles of the community like theft and gambling. The Christian Youth Missionary Group Kinawataka saw the light and turned their scientific life into an environmental mindfulness. Faced with the challenge of joblessness, food, money and restricted movement among other things was a blessing in disguise. The idea of farming even when one has no land rekindled the move to saving the environment, which was their ultimate goal.
Paul Onyayowun, the youth leader and his other five friends he explained combined forces to save themselves out of the boredom, little did they know that it was a rocket solution to saving the community they live in. This group of six (6), he noted were inspired by the ultimate goal to keep the environment clean in a bid to save the environment from the climate change, which is affecting the entire world. Plastics, old clothes, old car tires and wastes from the community, which could block the drainage system have been turned into good use.
The youth have set up an exhibition garden comprising: tomatoes, rosemary, green paper, carrots, onions, mint, cabbages and lettuce among others.
They also aid homes to start up gardens.
The main plan is to use environment friendly materials to carry out agriculture.
